Slim pickings in all states…market flooded with too many schools/graduates. Wish I’d gone the RN route, but that field’s job market is getting bad too. I would not recommend this career field anymore. Sad, but true.

There are 24,000 dental hygienists in California and less than 10,000 jobs. Thousands of California hygienists are unemployed or underemployed. According to the California Dental Association Journal, there are 32,000 dentists in California, only half of whom hire hygienists. Hygienists are no allowed to practice independently. Of the jobs offered, most are part-time jobs. To work full-time a dental hygienist must work part-time for two or more dentists in different offices. Most hygienists cannot find work.

Duane, just because your unable to find work doesn’t mean anyone younger with goals to inspire to be a hygienist should be negative because of your comment. I’m sure alot has to do with you in specific not the industry that has a proven 36% growth. Try to be more of a positive role model and maybe realize it could be just you they don’t want to hire.

I agree with the fact that the schools are becoming flooded. Schools are being pressured to up the enrolment or funding could go to other competeing schools. When people ask you about your opinion to become a dental hygienist try to spread the word to these people as much as possible that the feild is becoming flooded and there is no guarentee for a job after rigorous schooling and financial hardships. I dont want people to be lied to about employment opportunities. So spread the word..
