Role of a Dental Hygienist

Dental hygienists play a vital role in assisting dentists with a variety of procedures on a daily basis. Common practices that are performed routinely by hygienists include deep cleanings, extensive deep cleaning of the roots for patients with certain forms for gum disease, performing x-rays and sonic graphs and providing step by step instructions to patients on how to properly take care of their dental health.

Dental Hygienist Education

To become a dental hygienist, you must graduate from a school that focuses on a dental hygiene curriculum with an associate’s degree or higher. Most dental hygienists will settle with their associate’s degree and will be able to obtain positions without issue but some may continue their education through to a bachelor or master’s degree to advance their knowledge of their field and possibly one day work this into a prominent role as a true dentist. Once a degree has been obtained, a dental hygienist must obtain a license in the state they wish to practice in by providing documentation of their completed degree and passing any board examinations required by the state.

Salary Outlook

Salaries for dental hygienists can vary as with any other profession in the United States. Specifics, such as education and location, play a huge part in determining the true compensation for this profession. On average, most dental hygienists will find that their income will be in the $30.00 to $35.00 per hour range.
